Part ten: The dog

The Four-Leaf Clover

Bright, warm sunshine streamed through the window of the old schoolhouse. It awakened Kelly, the young Irish colleen.
Suddenly, she realized that overnight, Prince, her frog friend, had changed into a young man. The good leprechaun-cobbler, Timothy O’Leary, had been true to his word and fulfilled her first wish.
“I wonder, does Prince know yet?” she wondered. “He seems so perfect!”
Then she found the three, gold coins Timothy placed into her shoes after he repaired the soles.
“I still have my three wishes!”
Kelly decided to let Prince and Timothy sleep. She re-started the fire with flint, made a pot of green tea and toasted several crumpets.
Suddenly, she heard a whimper. Opening the door, she found a young, Irish terrier
“Oh my, you are just a puppy! I wonder who you belong to?” she said softly, as she picked him up and held him tight. “You must have been washed down here by the flood. You are safe now, sweetie.”
Looking at all of the water, she became frightened.
“Oh no, it’s still rising! We will probably have to leave here today.”
Turning towards the schoolhouse again, she spotted something green floating in the water.
“I found a four-leaf clover, too,” she said, reaching down to retrieve it. “This means more good luck.”
“Stay quiet, pup,” she ordered. “I hope you don’t have the gift of the Blarney stone.”
Kelly placed the pup beside Prince and put the four-leaf clover on top of the new outfit that Timothy had made for him.
Meanwhile, Timothy peeked out one eye and listened, but pretended he was still asleep.
“Maybe these two will fall in love, yet,” he said to himself. “This looks promising.”
A few moments later, the pup licked Prince on the chin.
“What?” said Prince, as he awakened, suddenly.
He could hardly believe his eyes. He was a young man again.
“A new puppy, a four leaf clover and brand new clothes, too? This is the last thing I expected to happen today.”
Kelly and Timothy both smiled, but they both knew this day was not going to be easy for any of them.
